Le M5 fait son apparition en avril 1942 et le M5A1 en novembre 1942. Ce dernier modèle a été le plus longtemps produit avec une production arrêtée en juin 1944. Les M5 et le M5A1 ont été fabriqué par Cadillac, General Motors et Massey Harris. American Bus & Foundry Co. ont aussi participé à la production du M5A1. Dans l'ensemble plus de 18500 exemplaires de chars léger ont été fabriqué et utilisés sur tous les fronts et dans toutes les armées alliées des USA. Le M5A1 a eu une coque soudée avec un glacis plongeant et un arrière élevé comme le M5. Mais le M5A1 a été équipé de la nouvelle tourelle avec la saillie arrière. Comme M5, il a été équipé de le double moteur essence Twin Cadillac Series 42.
